CAW approves Air Canada contract

MONTREAL, June 27 (UPI) — The Canadian Auto Workers union said 87.7 percent of Air Canada sales and service agents had approved a four-year contract with the airline.
“The great spirit of our membership and the fight-back they launched across the country helped ensure this strong agreement was negotiated and overwhelmingly ratified,” CAW President Ken Lewenza said in a statement.
Although the vote ended a three-day strike, the union and the airline have yet to agree on terms of a new pension plan that does not guarantee a set payout for new hires, The Globe and Mail reported Monday.
That issue is headed to arbitration, the Toronto newspaper said.
The union said in a note to members before the vote that, “After Jan. 1, 2013, the early retirement options under the Air Canada pension plan will not be as generous.”
“However, the plan will continue to provide a very good benefit for those members who continue to work with Air Canada to age 55,” the union said.
