WASHINGTON, June 25 (UPI) — Washington regulators said the White House would seek to push the average fuel efficiency to 56.2 miles per gallon by 2025.

Sources told The Detroit News that White House aides and regulators held discussions with all three of Detroit’s large car makers to tell them of the initial proposal.

All three companies declined to comment on the proposal, the newspaper said.

Meetings with executives of foreign car companies are scheduled for next week. The proposal is expected to be formally submitted to the Environmental Protection Agency in September.

The News said to achieve a 56.2 miles per gallon average, the industry says average car price would go up at least $2,100.

To counter that, the Obama administration has said with higher fuel efficiency rates, car owners would save up to $7,000 in fuel costs over the life of the car.

The figure, however, could be an opening gambit, after which the industry and regulators would be expected to negotiate a compromise.
