Reducing Medical Debts

More than any other debt, medical bills can completely fracture a family’s financial security. People who have no health insurance or limited coverage often try to avoid medical bills for fear of not being able to pay it back. Short of bankruptcy, the debts can pile up eating away at your savings, paycheck, or even turn into liens on your home.
People fear medical collections with good reason. There is no payment plan with most medical debts. Once you are treated and if the bill isn’t paid within a few weeks or months, the accounts are often sold off to collection agencies. Those agencies start demanding the full balance at the onset and people who are afraid of being sued enter into a realm of constant requests and demands for payment.
With one in four adults having medical bills and no way to repay them, people often hide from the bill collectors which only adds to the stress. According to assetplatform.org, 39% of adults used up their savings trying to payoff medical bills. What’s worse is that the debts seem to never go away if you are uninsured. As quickly as you may payoff existing medical bills, you could get sick again. Then the process of trying to pay the costs starts all over. This cycle is usually what forces people into bankruptcy.
